Title
Letter from Lord John Russell to Queen Victoria
Date
22 February 1848
Writer
Russell, John, Lord
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Cabinet decided that a Select Committee should be proposed on Naval and Military expenditure. Notice to be given to the House. The Budget debate fixed for Monday. Exceptionally heavy taxes are on tea and tobacco. The most objectionable is the Window Tax. Some votes taken on account. Much ill humour anticipated by Russell. The Bishop of Chester's elevation to Archbishop of Canterbury is highly popular. The Earl of Powis will wait on Queen Victoria to deliver the late Earl's [Order of the Garter] Star and Ribbon. The Duke of Wellington writes to Russell respecting the widow of General Frederick Maitland, and Russell suggests a pension of £50.
