Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
16 April 1848
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria feels that Russell's remarks about the calamitous policy of the French Government are too true. The King most to be pitied as the cause of the misery; but Guizot more to blame as responsible adviser of the policy. Some say that nothing could have prevented the catastrophe. The French could not keep quiet for a number of years. Her Majesty thinks Prince Metternich the cause of half the misfortunes through his ill advice. Fortunate that the Archduke has arrived at Frankfurt, being popular. [The reference is the fall of Louis Philippe of France.] Queen Victoria expresses her alarm and anxiety as to the state of Ireland. Yet the events of Monday must have salutary effect.
